You said you need this message to reach a larger audience. When you first came into the game, the idea of love and sex was very different than the construct we have today. I remember listening to you in middle school, high school, and now well into my adulthood. It goes back to choices and moments–when it’s more than sex, when there’s love, there’s a commitment with your partner and understanding what that commitment entails, then making conscious decisions, moment by moment, to live that. You go all in on both levels when it comes to that. Especially if you are a passionate person when you’re passionate you give your all to everything you do, no matter what it is. Sometimes it’s kind of hard to tell the difference, because they’re so close. So in your opinion–writing this song–and with your values, what’s the difference between love and sex? And it can be hard to pinpoint the exact moment you started applying that experience to your everyday interactions, since like you said, it’s coming down to making decisions based on your values.

There’s no one moment for me it’s a series of growth opportunities and fluid choices. Once good values have been instilled, those values become a decision making factor. Love, sex, and life is all about learning and growing–that’s what we’re here for. I try to have constant and continual learning moments, in every arena of life. Every day that I wake up, it’s about choices. It comes down to choices, because that’s what dictates everything: Choices. There’s always a good and a bad side to everything. Joe: When it comes to anything at all, there has to be balance. Do you remember when that “Aha!” moment happened for you, personally? TS: Maybe everyone kind of has this “Aha!” moment, when they realize there really is a marked difference between the two. Joe: You know, maybe so! You have to learn to balance the two. Is it safe to say that this is something you have strong feelings about, the difference between love and sex? I wouldn’t expect anything less, especially since you’ve revisited this topic twice. Between you, Kelly, and Bille Woodruff, you guys created a visual and musical masterpiece. TS: She did! The video came out fantastic! We’ve seen her grow and develop as an artist her talent is extraordinary as well. She’s been on my checklist of artists that I wanted to work with. TS: How did Kelly Rowland end up on the track with you? Did you have her in mind?
There’s a big crossover, which leaves room for legendary collaborations, like things I’ve done in the past with Big Pun and Mariah Carey now this. I have a lot of fans that appreciate all different types of music, not just R&B. It’s more inclusive and it reaches another part of my audience. Joe: Exactly, it appeals to my fans that love hip hop and pop as well. “Love & Sex, Pt 1” is more like a ballad, whereas this is more upbeat. TS: It’s got a different sound than the first track. It’s a beautiful record, a beautiful song, and having Kelly on it makes it all the more special.
I needed this message to reach another audience. Joe: I felt I needed to revisit this song because the first one doesn’t explain the difference between love and sex adequately. The Source: Your lead single from Bridges (due summer 2014) is “Love and Sex, Pt. Joe took some time out from his studio schedule, where he’s working on his next album, Bridges, to talk to us about his lead single, “Love & Sex, Pt. It’s not the only album goodie though check ‘First Lady’ – another fab dancer or ‘Love And Sex Part 2’ – a duet with Kelly Rowland that’s as good a ballad as any you’ll have heard in 2014.Īnyway, cutting to the chase, the album is about to get an official UK physical release (January 5th) so if you missed it back in the summer, the time’s right to get onto one of the very best recent proper modern soul sets… and if you want to read more check our review he’s dropping gems in the form of wisdom or bars, there’s no denying that the man is blessed with a powerful voice that he uses for the better. Indeed one the album’s key cuts – the ultra catchy ‘Future Teller’ – was considered so good that it won a place on the ‘Soul Together 2014’ compilation… a kind of Hall Of Fame for the very best of the year’s modern soul. The album won support right across the spectrum – enjoyed by hard core R&B addicts and the more conservative modern soul crew alike. It came out on his own label (Plaid Takeover) and was quickly acclaimed as one of his very best. The long player was/is Mr Thomas’ eleventh studio album and his first without long time manager and mentor Kedar Massenburg.
